AI Engineer Hourly Rate in 2026: US vs LATAM

Salary, employer cost and bill rate are three different numbers. Here they are for US, freelance and LATAM AI engineers, with the 2,080-hour math shown.

The honest AI engineer hourly rate in 2026 depends on which number you mean: what the engineer is paid, what an employer spends, or what a client is billed. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics median for computer and information research scientists, the closest federal category to AI and ML work, is $140,300 a year, which works out to $67.45 an hour. Freelance AI engineers on Upwork mostly charge $35 to $60 an hour. Senior engineers at large tech companies earn far more than either figure.

Those three numbers measure different things. Most rate articles mix them up, which is how a founder ends up comparing a freelancer's bill rate with an employee's salary and drawing the wrong conclusion.

Key Takeaways

  • Convert salary to hourly with 2,080 hours (52 weeks x 40 hours). Upwork uses the same convention.
  • US: BLS median $140,300/yr ($67.45/hr) for the closest category; Levels.fyi's senior software engineer median total comp of $312,587 is about $150/hr.
  • Freelance: Upwork lists a typical range of $35 to $60 an hour for AI engineers (median about $50), with experts at $75 to well over $100.
  • LATAM: Revelo, a vendor, reports a senior AI/ML median salary of $72,000 ($34.62/hr) and about $103,000 a year all-in through Revelo, its margin included ($49.52/hr).

The math, shown

Every hourly figure below is annual pay divided by 2,080 hours. That's 52 weeks of 40 hours with no vacation taken out, so it slightly understates the real cost per worked hour. It's still the standard: Upwork's own conversion fee is calculated on 2,080 hours.

SourceWhat it measuresAnnualHourly (/2,080)
BLS, computer and information research scientists (May 2025)US median wage$140,300$67.45
Levels.fyi 2025 report, all US software engineers, H2 2025Median total comp (incl. equity)$195,000$93.75
Levels.fyi 2025, senior engineer levelMedian total comp$312,587$150.28
Upwork AI engineer cost pageFreelance bill rate, typical rangen/a$35 to $60
Revelo, LATAM senior AI/ML (vendor data)Median salary$72,000$34.62
Revelo, LATAM senior AI/MLAll-in price through Revelo (incl. its margin)$103,000$49.52
Revelo, Mexico senior AI/ML (vendor data)Median salary$78,000$37.50

Three cautions on that table. Levels.fyi is self-reported and skews toward big tech, and its 2025 report has no AI-specific pay figure, so the rows above are for software engineers generally. Levels.fyi does call AI/ML the "fastest growing track" and "one of the largest and highest-paid SWE tracks." The BLS category is a proxy, not a title match. And Revelo is a staffing vendor reporting its own placement data, which is useful but not neutral.

Title-specific salary sites run higher than the BLS proxy; our how to hire an AI engineer guide cites one at about $185,000 base for US AI engineers. The BLS category mixes in research roles and the whole country, so treat $67.45 as a floor for senior AI hires, not the going rate.

Salary, employer cost and bill rate are different numbers

A salary is what the engineer receives before taxes. Employer cost adds payroll taxes, benefits, equipment and recruiting. A bill rate is what a provider or freelancer charges you, which has to cover all of that plus their own costs.

So when Upwork's page shows a typical range of $35 to $60 an hour, that's a global freelance marketplace bill rate, with engineers from everywhere, at every level, often on short projects. When Revelo shows $49.52 an hour all-in, that's what a client pays Revelo for a senior engineer in Latin America: salary, benefits, compliance and Revelo's own margin. It's a bill rate, so compare it with other bill rates. Neither is directly comparable with a US base salary of $67.45 an hour, because the US number leaves out benefits and taxes that typically add a meaningful percentage on top.

What actually moves an AI engineer's rate

Title matters less than the work. "AI engineer" covers someone wiring an LLM API into a product, someone building retrieval pipelines with evaluations, and someone training models. The second and third command more. Our post on the LLM engineer vs AI engineer distinction explains why.

Production experience moves it most. An engineer who has shipped an LLM feature to real users, with evals, cost limits and fallbacks, is in a different pay band from one with notebook demos. Seniority, English fluency for client-facing work, and time-zone overlap come next.

A Concrete Version

Say you're a 20-person Series A company adding AI search to your product. You need one senior engineer for at least a year.

A US hire at the BLS median costs $140,300 in salary, plus benefits, payroll tax and recruiting. If you're competing with big tech for the same person, the Levels.fyi senior number ($312,587 total comp) is the more realistic ceiling.

A freelancer from a marketplace at $50 an hour costs $104,000 a year at full time, if you can find one who will commit full time for a year, which most won't.

A senior LATAM engineer through a staff augmentation vendor runs about $103,000 a year all-in on Revelo's published figure, or $49.52 an hour, covering the engineer and the provider. Ruzora doesn't publish a rate card; our pricing is a flat monthly rate per engineer, typically 40-60% below the fully-loaded cost of an equivalent US hire, and we quote the exact number for a role.

The cheapest hour rarely decides it. What decides it is which option gets a production-grade engineer working in your time zone for a year.

The Honest Counterpoint

If your AI work is research (new architectures, model training at scale, publishing), hourly comparisons stop mattering. The people who can do that are scarce everywhere, and you should hire the best one you can find, wherever they are, at whatever it costs.

If your need is a two-week prototype, a freelancer at a marketplace rate is probably the right buy, and neither a full-time hire nor staff augmentation makes sense.

And lower cost per hour isn't savings if the engineer needs three months to become productive. Pay for proven production LLM work, even if it costs more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average AI engineer hourly rate in the US?

Using the BLS median for computer and information research scientists ($140,300 a year), it's about $67.45 an hour in wages. Senior engineers at large tech companies earn far more; Levels.fyi's 2025 senior software engineer median total comp works out to about $150 an hour.

How much do freelance AI engineers charge per hour?

Upwork lists a typical range of $35 to $60 an hour for AI engineers on its platform (median about $50), with a full range from $25 to well over $100; experts sit at the top of that range.

How much does a senior AI engineer cost in Latin America?

Revelo, a staffing vendor, reports a senior LATAM AI/ML engineer median salary of $72,000 a year ($34.62/hr) and an all-in price through Revelo, margin included, of about $103,000 ($49.52/hr). Treat it as vendor data and check current quotes.

The Bottom Line

Compare like with like: salary with salary, employer cost with employer cost, bill rate with bill rate. Then weigh production experience and overlap above the hourly figure. If you want to see vetted AI engineers in Latin America, start at hire AI engineers in LATAM or ask for a quote.
